The Gays of Sydney

People from conservative nations will surely be in awe of not just the height of tolerance over Sydney’s gay community, but also the lavish and glorious event of the New Mardi Gras. It has been successful in promoting the rights of gays and lesbians in the world. If it ain’t so, it wouldn’t be a world-renowned event.

Take on some history check?

Where did all these gays and lesbians come from?

June 24, 1978 marks the Stonewall Riots. During that period, homosexuality was a crime in New South Wales until 1982. The Stonewall event was actually a protest march with license but the police revoked it. Many people were discriminated by the community, and more even lost their jobs since being gay was a social taboo then.

In 1979, the event was held again. This time it was changed into “Sydney Gay Mardi Gras”. From then on gay parades and post-parties in commemoration of the event became the tradition.

So now we know it’s a shout of the gay community for social acceptance.

Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

I wonder if that fight still rings a bell. The New Mardi Gras seems to me more like a festive celebration of human nature, that it appeals to not just the gays and the lesbians, but to everyone else regardless of your sexual orientation. Well, no doubt you can see the talent of the gays. What with their flamboyant costumes and grand funky floats, you can tell how marvelous they are… and yeah how colorful their personalities seem to be!

Gays in Sydney are blessed to be among the most accepted group of their kind in the world. Sydney, as a city is tolerant and accepting of this sector of society. I believe they do enjoy equal rights in job opportunities, and other social dealings. And of course, everyone’s got the right for true love.

The gays of Sydney are fortunate to celebrate their unique individuality without their neighbors frowning upon them. Can you just imagine the political struggle it will take if we bring their gay parade to conservative lands? There might be any color at all…

Sydney is truly a beautiful city – aesthetically, and politically.
