Australia emerges as a top high-income country with its citizens working for long hours, including weekends – at the price of a deteriorating family life.
Mike Steketee of news.com.au writes that “two million Australians worked on Sundays and on average they did so for almost a full day.” Add to that are the statistics indicating that the Australia work force combines long average working hours (7pm- 7am), great amount of casual work, plus the increasing trend in irregular hours of labor.
This kind of work culture has made a negative impact on today’s Australian family life and health. Reports from the Relationships Forum Australia explain that the favorable economic level enjoyed by Australians comes at the price of strained family relationships and poor health among parents and children. Australians confirm that long working hours and the amount of work on weekend do really have an effect on personal life.
Evidence of these are the increasing instances of divorce and separation, signs of physical aggression among toddlers whose parents take part in this kind of work culture, and depression experienced by working parents.
While it is imperative that government do something about the policies to maintain the welfare of its labor force (and their families), it is the responsibility of parents, as well to take charge in protecting their families from such kind of harsh scenario.
There is no such thing as “no time”. There is always time, one just have to make time for the more important things in life. It’s all a matter of priority. Prosperity and professional success are good. But these do not simply amount to anything when you fail at home, and your family suffers.
With the natural beauty of Australia, it’s a surprise that people do not take the time to indulge in its vacation surprises. Vacation with the family promotes bonding and improves parent-child relationship. It de-stresses the mind and body, thus allowing one to focus more on the more important things that needs to be attended to.
There is so much that Australia has to offer aside from long working hours. Sundays are for the family. Start healing the strained ties by going on a travel vacation. Sydney and the rest of the country (except Cairns this season) are ripe to be vacation destinations. A lot of budget hotels in Sydney, and Sydney apartments guarantee a memorable stay for your family.
Touring the family and having a good time together can be a first step in renewing what was lost all this time. After all, your family is the main reason for that hard work.
