Interesting facts about the Three Sisters in Katoomba Blue Mountains

We are all aware that The Three Sisters has been one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Blue Mountains. But little do we know that this famous attraction in the town of katoomba is filled with fascinating facts that will never fail to amaze everyone.

Did you know that the Sisters were formed because of erosion? Blue Mountains’ sandstone has a soft characteristic that made it easily eroded over time by natural cause (wind, rain, rivers and the cliffs surrounding the Jamison Valley had broken up).

Did you know that formations like Three Sisters are created when water seeps into small cracks in the rock? This led to gradual enlargement of these cracks that tend to erode eventually. That’s why over time, the Sisters will be eroded away completely.

Did you know that each of these three rocks has name? Their names are Meehni (922 m), Wimlah (918 m), and Gunnedoo (906 m).

Did you know that according to legends, three sisters fell in love with three men from a neighbouring tribe? But since marriage was forbidden by tribal law, a battle was ensued, and the sisters were turned into stones by an elder to protect them, but he was killed in the fighting and no one else could turn them back.
